Power 2 Play Sports
History
Power 2 Play Sports roots were founded in 1990 in Russell, Minnesota and originally conducted business as the Minnesota Spirit Basketball Club. The Founder, Michael Peterson, graduated with a Master of Arts Degree in Sports Management from the University of Northern Colorado. His passion for the game of basketball, sports, and kids was the driving force behind his vision. For over 10 years, the programs struggled but eventually evolved into the largest youth sports club program in the state of Minnesota with 105 total teams, and 1100 players state-wide by the summer of 1999.
In May of 2000, a job relocation to Colorado created an opportunity for the Founder to sell the Minnesota Spirit Basketball Club for a mere $60,000. With his life in tow in a 1984 Honda Civic Hatchback, the Founder accepted a marketing position in Fort Collins, Colorado at Triple Crown Sports, and worked in the baseball division.
At the time, there were no formal youth basketball leagues or tournaments in the Northern Colorado region. With the Founder's deep love for the game of basketball, he often dreamed about one day running his own basketball leagues and tournaments. So, during a late evening of playing cards, and a series of play-on-words, the name Power 2 Play Sports was born at 2:30 AM. The primary focus was to improve the environment of youth tournaments and leagues in Colorado and beyond.
In the first year, Power 2 Play Sports managed a whopping 13 teams in its fall and winter league series! From 2001-2008, Power 2 Play Sports changed the business model and focused on providing premier college facilities and concentrate on the philosophy of making a positive difference in the lives of kids through sports. With the added focus during this time, Power 2 Play Sports flourished and quickly became one of the largest independent youth sports companies in the Rocky Mountain region.
During 2008 -2010 the Founder took some time off from the business to focus on reconnecting with some of his family and relocated back to the Midwest. While living in the Midwest, the Founder spent several days working on his business plan to help take Power 2 Play Sports to the next level. Upon his return to Colorado in 2010, Power 2 Play Sports had a new line of focus that would require a full-time dedicated commitment to his passion and goal of building a youth sports complex. From 2011-2016, programs doubled, and revenues tripled, creating leverage and financial stability to get approved by Points West Community Bank in the Fall of 2014. A groundbreaking ceremony occurred on October 15, 2015. During the initial construction of the Event Center, a massive mistake in manufacturing the exterior walls 9 feet too short caused 8 months of delays and the risk of the company folding and investors/partners backing out of the project. The Founder worked with the bank to extend loans, and funds to achieve the Event Center opening on February 6, 2017.
Currently, a new ownership group, Shane and Jennifer Powell have partnered with the Founder, Michael Peterson to assist in taking the dream, efforts, and success to new heights for the northern Colorado community and beyond. To date, Power 2 Play Sports services thousands of teams and players from Colorado and has become a gold standard around the country. With the addition of new ownership, management, leadership, and plans in place, the future of Power 2 Play Sports is exciting and opportunistic to become an impact maker in the lives of athletes of all ages. We are excited about the future!
